Developing a Plan

As Floridians, many of us know the dangers and cost that flooding can cause in our homes. Though there are certain times, when natural disasters are concerned, that we cannot prevent our homes from being flooded, there are other situations in which we absolutely can protect our homes from floods. Today at Dreyer’s DKI in Gainesville we would like to share FIVE ways you can work to protect your home against unnecessary flooding.

Outside of the home you should be sure that your gutters are clear and your downspouts are facing away from your home. When there are heavy rains in your area misdirected downspouts or clogged gutters can create major issues. Your downspouts should be facing away from your home and flowing down your property.

If your house is situated in a downhill angle on your property you will want to ensure to install proper drainage around the home to help water flow away.

If your home is prone to flooding and moving is not an option, there are quite a few actions you can take to decrease the cost or amount of damages your home receives each time flooding occurs:

  • use large rugs as opposed to wall to wall carpeting in high flood areas-these rugs you’ll be able to easily remove if heavy rains are scheduled
  • remember that lime plaster is the most water resistant
  • replace wooden frames on doors and windows with a more water resistant option
