Developing a Plan

Developing a Plan for disaster

You would never expect to wake up to a fire, flood, or other natural disaster in your home, and of course you’d never desire to go through that experience with your family. However, it really is better to be prepared for said situation. It is with this in mind that Dreyer’s DKI in Gainesville would like to help you today by offering a few steps you can take with your family to develop a Disaster Plan, in case the unthinkable were to happen.

First you must set up a meeting with your family. Discuss the types of disasters that are likely to happen in your area and how you should handle each of them. For example, in Florida we are susceptible to floods and hurricanes. After you’ve established what you may be dealing with, do the following:

  • assign age appropriate responsibilities for family members
  • establish a meeting place outside of the home-as well as one that is farther away from the home, but still in an area where your children can easily find it
  • have emergency contact information that is easy for your children to remember as well

  • remind your family of what is the most important in case of disaster-their lives-and work with that in mind
  • Handling Evacuation should be something to consider. In case the disaster spans more than just your home or family, there are a few arrangements that should be established in advance
  • if you have pets, be sure to find a place for them to stay – make arrangements with a pet hotel, animal shelter, or friend who is willing to take your pet(s) in
  • make arrangements for your family – have an out of town contact you can stay with, or have an idea of a hotel that is outside of the evacuated range
