How to Maintain Natural Stone Surfaces

We do not recommend that you use general cleaners to clean your natural stone floors. Most products are not formulated to clean natural stone and can break down the sealer and may cause etch marks. Any products containing lemon, vinegar, ammonia or bleach should be avoided.

Types of Natural Stone

  • Limestone: Limestone is sensitive to acids and varies in hardness.
  • Marble: Marble is a soft and porous material and can scratch easily. Marble is also sensitive to acids.
  • Travertine: Travertine is a type of limestone that has been formed by water erosion. Travertine is like marble in the sense that it is sensitive to acids.
  • Slate: Slate is usually dark in color and consists of fine-grained metamorphic stone.  Slate is not sensitive to acid but can become streaked and dull if household cleaners are used excessively.
  • Granite: Granite is known to be extremely hard and is not as porous as other stone. Granite is just like slate in the sense that it is not sensitive to acids.
